The Holland Occupational Themes is a theory of personality that focuses on career and vocational choice. It groups students based on their suitability for six different categories of occupations. The six types yield the RIASEC acronym, by which the theory is also commonly known. The theory was developed by John L. Holland over the course of his career, starting in the 1950s. Holland’s test has become one of the standards used in career counseling.
We feel that taking this assessment will allow our students to pull back some of the clouds in the fog that often accompanies a career or college choice. After taking the assessment your SC Whitmore counselor will be better able to classify your career or college choice. After taking the assessment we can discuss where you fall on the RIASEC scale: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.
There are a number of free places online to take the test, however we feel that the Open Source Psychometrics Project is the best resource for this test. It is simple and provides your results immediately. If discussing with your counselor, make sure you send your scores to your counselor via email or LMS message.
Procedure: The test consists of 48 tasks that you will have to rate by how much you would enjoy performing each on a scale of (1) dislike (2) slightly dislike (3) neither like not dislike (4) slightly enjoy (5) enjoy. The test will take most five to ten minutes to complete. To assess the test visit this link: http://personality-testing.info/tests/RIASEC/
Participation: Your use of this assessment should be for educational and career purposes only. It should not be used as psychological advice and is not a replacement for a counselor. Remember, your scores do not reflect what your job will be in the future, it is simply a tool used to help in your journey towards finding a job that is suitable. Additionally, your answers may be anonymously stored and used for research.
The O*NET program is the nation's primary source of occupational information. Central to the project is the O*NET database, containing information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors. The database, which is available to the public at no cost, is continually updated by surveying a broad range of workers from each occupation. Information from this database forms the heart of O*NET OnLine, an interactive application for exploring and searching occupations. The database also provides the basis for our Career Exploration Tools, a set of valuable assessment instruments for workers and students looking to find or change careers.
O*NET continues to be a place where we want our students to be very active in. One of the many great attributes of the O*NET website is the continually updated database on jobs. O*NET provides many tools for our students to further their career exploration. Among those are an ‘Ability Profiler’, an ‘Interest Profiler’, and a ‘Work Importance Locator’. Our hope at SC Whitmore is that you would use this incredible resource not only during your career as a high school student, but also later down the road when looking for a job.
For our students one of the best resources you can use now is the ‘Interest Profiler’. The ‘Interest Profiler’ can help you find out what your interest are and how they relate to the world of work. To put it simply, you can find out what you like to do. The profiler also helps you decide what kinds of careers you want to explore.
