Year 6 Transition Day

On Wednesday 6th July, over 250 year 6 students came to visit the Academy and experience a day as an SCWA student before they start in year 7. As one of the most heavily oversubscribed schools in Greenwich, the admissions process was hotly contested to be part of the cohort of 2022.

When the Year 6's were dropped off, they were excited but nervous, looking forward to meeting new people and developing a better understanding of Academy life.

The students were welcomed to the Academy by the Principal, Ms Kazmi, and Assistant Principal, Mr Spark, who spoke about the importance of an Academy community dedicated to developing students as scholars of their subjects but also more holistically, creating future global leaders and citizens with the tools to make positive change. Following this, students were led by Ms French and Ms O'Neill in a whole-group music session where they learnt about the ukelee that they would be given in September and got to release some of their inhibitions through song.

During the day, in class groups, students each experienced two lessons from a range of subjects, including English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and Religious Education. In these lessons they had the opportunity to meet members of the teaching staff and immerse themselves in the classroom environment. Each class group was accompanied by a number of current Year 12 students from the Arden Sixth Form who were fantastic at supporting their group in and out of lessons, making them feel welcome and at home. Between lessons, students went to the restaurant where the Academy provided them with a selection of lunch options. Through this, they were also able to experience a lunchtime service and meet the restaurant staff. Following their second lesson, students returned to the hall for an assembly from Assistant Principal, Ms Marsh, about the wide range of fantastic enrichment opportunities that they would be able to be involved in. Underlining our Academy's commitment to developing students holistically and beyond the classroom through a number of opportunities including trips, sports clubs and after school enrichment. Finally, Mr Spark congratulated all students on a fantastic day and awarded certificates to two students from each class group who had been nominated by the Sixth Form students due to their outstanding effort, excellent work and demonstration of the learner profile attributes. These students were:

Harry T Ruby H Erkan C Max C Veronica R Nat R Amari B Ronnie B Jack F

Elsie O Isabella C Harry P Dylan K-C Honey S Sib B Eleanor R

At the end of the day, all students agreed that they had a better understanding and felt more comfortable and less nervous than they had at the start. Throughout the day, their behaviour, focus and attitude were impeccable and we look forward to welcoming the 2022 year 7 cohort in the new Academic year.

"Now I have experienced being around the Academy and met some of the teachers I feel less nervous about starting in September".

Well done to the SCWA Arden Sixth Form students for being outstanding mentors on the day.
