At Umoja International Academy, Physical Education is about more than movement. It is about developing the whole person—physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. Every class is an opportunity to build healthy habits, strengthen character, and contribute to a community where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued.
Our expectations are guided by our PE motto:
Arrive on time and be in your assigned area when class begins.
Come prepared with your PE uniform, athletic shoes, water bottle, and a positive mindset.
Follow directions the first time and use all equipment safely.
Be present and engaged throughout the lesson.
Use words that encourage, include, and support others.
Demonstrate respect and sportsmanship toward classmates, teachers, officials, and guests.
Ask questions, advocate for yourself, and communicate respectfully.
Help create an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued.
Dress in the required PE uniform and athletic shoes each day.

Take care of our equipment, facilities, and shared spaces.

Keep phones and personal electronics stored in your locker or backpack during class unless instructed otherwise.
PHONES/ELECTRONICS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE ON THE STUDENT DURING PE
Use the restroom before class whenever possible.
Bring only water into activity areas unless teacher approval has been given.
Care for school equipment and leave our spaces better than you found them.
Everyone has opportunities to learn and grow. When expectations are not met, our goal is to help students reflect, make better choices, and restore our community.

A respectful reminder gives students the opportunity to make a different choice.

If needed, students may take a brief pause for a private check-in before rejoining the class.
✔ Reflection
If concerns continue, students will complete a reflection, participate in a restorative conversation, and families may be contacted to work together toward success.
When appropriate, school support staff will partner with students and families to provide additional guidance and encouragement.

Our PE uniform and locker procedures help create a safe, consistent, and inclusive learning environment.
Wear the designated PE shirt, approved athletic bottoms, and athletic shoes each day.

If obtaining a uniform presents a challenge, please contact the PE department. We are committed to working with families to ensure every student can be successful.
Each student will be assigned a locker and lock (or may use an approved personal lock).
Store phones, electronics, backpacks, and personal belongings in your locker during class.
Keep your locker clean, organized, and securely locked.
Respect shared spaces and take responsibility for your belongings.
