The SPOOKY Bone Bridge Challenge

For this month's challenge, we'd like you to build a bridge - a spooky bridge! It can be a suspension bridge, a stand alone bridge, a long bridge, a colorful bridge - so many possibilities! Please check out the videos below to learn more about bridges in general and the science and engineering behind them. You can use any materials you want- the sky is the limit! But you must follow the specific rules below so please make sure you read those before getting started.

Please review the GENERAL RULES before continuing on to this month's challenge.

Here are the OCTOBER 2020 Challenge Rules:

  1. The bridge MUST be at least 12" long

  2. The bridge MUST include Q-tips (our bones!) in some way

  3. The bridge MUST be able to carry some weight ( for example hot wheels cars, lego people, other small objects)

That's it! The rest is up to you and your imagination!

Please submit your write-up and a picture and/or video (or two!) of your creation to WOMakerspace@gmail.com by no later than October 31, 2020.

If you need Q-tips for this project, please let us know HERE.

Harrison, 3rd Grade

Natalie, 3rd Grade &

Eleanor, Kindergarten

What did you build?

"We built a spooky bridge. Its name is The Haunted Halloween Bridge. The bridge’s purpose is to help cars and people cross a slot canyon in Arizona. The reason why the bridge is haunted is because mummy skeletons used to use the bridge as a home. Once they died off, people made their home into a bridge. However, the mummies left all their belongings on the bridge. Their mummy leader lured 12 army spiders to spin webs all over the bridge so if a mummy fell, a web would catch them. Then another mummy could pull them up."

What did you learn?

"We learned that when your bridge is leaning, you can stabilize it by putting two paper towel rolls and stretching them far apart from each other. Then you grab a smaller paper towel and tape it in between the other rolls to form an a. When we did this to all of our rolls, our bridge was much more stable."

What would you improve next time?

"Next time, we would want to make dead mummies and skeletons. "

Noah, 3rd Grade & Charlotte, 1st Grade

Austen, 3rd Grade

What did you build?

"I built a bone bridge made out of legos and q-tips with coins to show weight on the bridge."

What did you learn?

"Glue does not work well to keep q-tips together. "

What would you improve next time?

"I would try to use the q-tips in a better way."

Gregory, 3rd Grade

What did you build?

"I built a monster-only bridge, guarded bye spiders. There’s a purple scanner that scans the inside of cars. If it is a human, the spider guards will come and turn the human into bloody bones. If it is a monster, he will get a keycard to pass the bridge. "

What did you learn?

"Every bridge should have a stable base for support. And a bridge is only interesting with a story."

What would you improve next time?

"I would add a guardhouse for the spiders to live, and add zombies that can help out with nightshift."

Shaelyn

What did you learn?

"I learned that there are different kinds of bridges."
