Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills are organized into five competencies (see below). This framework was created by an organization called the Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Responding to emotions in healthy ways and showing self-control. Setting and reaching goals through persistence and organization.

Putting yourself in another person's shoes. Being able to recognize sources of support in your family, school, and community.

Making and keeping healthy relationships. This includes clear communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and more.

The ability to use critical thinking, to weigh pros and cons and make good choices about personal and social behavior.

Minnesota's K-12 SEL Standards

In 2018, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) released SEL learning goals that apply across grades K-12 + specific benchmarks for the grade bands of K-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12. These standards and benchmarks are detailed enough to provide educators with clear expectations regarding child development and the kinds of skills we should aim to focus on at different grade levels. The Early Childhood Indicators of Progress (ECIPs) cover these skills in preschool.
