Scott County Online Learning Academy, SCOLA, is an asynchronous online learning option for students in grades K-12 who wish to continue their education full-time through an innovative learning environment. SCOLA provides an option for students who seek an alternative to face-to-face instruction due to unique family situations, medical vulnerability, or simply to better meet their current academic needs. Students enrolled in SCOLA will experience online learning with identified support, contact with a mentor teacher, as well as opportunities for acceleration and enrichment. Additionally, SCOLA students will maintain a connection with their assigned districted school which allows them to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities including clubs, dances, and athletics.
Flexibility: SCOLA allows students to access educational materials and complete assignments at their own pace and schedule.
Personalized Learning: SCOLA can provide personalized learning experiences tailored to individual students. Students can progress through the material at their own pace, revisiting concepts they find challenging or moving ahead quickly if they grasp the content easily.
Increased Self-Discipline and Time Management Skills: SCOLA requires students to take responsibility for managing their time effectively. By setting their own schedules and meeting deadlines, students develop valuable self-discipline and time management skills. These skills are essential for success in higher education and the workplace, where individuals often have to manage their own tasks and priorities.
Individualized Support: Although SCOLA is asynchronous, it can still provide opportunities for individualized support. SCOLA provides each student with a mentor teacher and dedicated staff who utilize email, chat features, or virtual office hours, where students can seek assistance from teachers. Students can receive personalized feedback on their assignments and engage in online chat discussions to clarify concepts or ask questions. SCOLA also offers weekly in-person tutoring hours.
Accessibility: SCOLA can accommodate students with different accessibility needs. The SCOLA learning platfrom can include features such as closed captioning, text-to-speech functionality, a text reader, and modified assignments, making the content more accessible to students with specific needs. Additionally, students who may be unable to attend traditional brick-and-mortar schools due to phyiscial or mental health needs can benefit from asynchronous online learning, ensuring they receive a quality education despite their circumstances.
It's important to note that while asynchronous online learning offers numerous benefits, it may not be suitable for all students or learning scenarios. Some students thrive in traditional classroom environments or require more direct interaction and guidance from in-person teachers. Therefore, it's essential to consider individual learning needs and preferences when choosing an educational approach. An ARC metting is required for students with Individual Education Plans to determine if SCOLA is their least restrictive enviornment.
Learning will occur through our learning management system called Schools PLP. Students will complete age-appropriate, engaging lessons with access to tools that support learning, including text to speech, audio and translation, text and picture dictionaries, and more. Our SCOLA staff can easily monitor student progress and performance with usage statistics, grading and feedback tools, curriculum maps, and communication tools.
By offering this curriculum, we will prioritize giving our learners a well-rounded, high-quality education, along with more ownership over their learning, which is one of the first steps in developing a lifelong desire to learn.
