Going to School Online
What does it mean to go to school online? Like all schools, SCOLA is made up of many parts, most of them accessible through the internet. SCOLA students primarily use an online program called Schools PLP, to participate in class courses. Students will also be required to use their assigned school email to communicate with their assigned mentor teacher and SCOLA staff. If required, some students may use Zoom to meet with their mentor teacher/SCOLA staff.
The Schools PLP learning management system is the core of the SCOLA learning experience—this is where and how you'll come to school every day. To use Schools PLP, you need to be connected to the Internet. You also need a username and password. This username and password will be shared with families prior to first day of school.
It takes a lot of self-motivation for students to direct their own learning in a virtual environment. While you will be using robust online texts and curricula there are some strategies that can help you succeed. Below are some common expectations to ensure your SCOLA success.
SCOLA students must remain "On Pace" and passing ALL courses with a minimum grade of 65%. Student progress checks will take place each Friday. Any student who is "Far Behind" or has a grade less than 65% in any class will be be placed on academic probation.
Any student on academic probations who does not improve to "On Pace" and passing ALL courses with a minimum grade of 65% or better by the provided date will be required to return to In-Person learning at their districted school on the following school day. For example if your academic probation ends on Friday, June 2nd and you do meet the required criteria on that date, you will be required to return to in person on Monday, June 5th.
Adhere to the Scott County Code of Conduct and Acceptable Use Policy while participating in SCOLA.
Complete activities each school day to be considered present for attendance. Students who do not complete learning activities on any required school day will be considered absent. Simply logging in and not completing a learning activity does not count for present attendance.
Attend meetings with SCOLA staff, if required (by appointment only).
If required, participate in Zoom sessions with video camera on and ready to participate.
Self advocate and seek help from your assigned mentor teacher, as needed.
Communicate with your teacher/mentor and peers in a respectful manner.
Acknowledge that the school district has access to your schoolwork, online searches, email, assignments, comments posted within the online courses when you are logged in which your school assigned email.
Students must use their school assigned email to communicate with SCOLA staff.
Do not put "I don't understand or I need help" on a submitted assignment. Seek any needed help/support BEFORE submiting an assignment.
Parents/Guardians are considered the student's learning coach in SCOLA.
A copy of the parent agreement from may be found here.
A student's success in SCOLA is dependent on both the student and parent’s investment into the program. Parents/Guardians who elect to have their child participate in the SCOLA model must agree to the following:
I agree to ensure my child has an engaged guardian/adult who serves as their learning coach, that will actively support them at home throughout the school year. I understand that I am considered my child's learning coach while in SCOLA. I understand that my child will receive online instruction through an educational platform that is asynchronous (not live).
I agree to abide by and support my child in following the procedures outlined in the SCS Discipline Code of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline.
I agree that SCOLA students are REQUIRED to attend in-person for state/districted mandated assessments at their districtd schkool/designated area. This includes state and district testing such as KSA, ACT, iReady, MAP, Civics Exam, etc... I understand that failure to do so makes them ineligible for the SCOLA program.
I agree that my child will remain on track/on pace in all courses and maintain a 65% or better to participate in the SCOLA program.
I agree that my child will engage in learning through their SCOLA platform each day SCS is in session. I understand that SCOLA follows the SCS district attendance policy. If my student is absent from participation I must provide a parent/doctor note. Students will be counted absent if they do not log in each school day, making progress by completing activities on course work. Idle login time does not count for attendance.
I understand that communication from SCOLA is primarily through email and IC messenger. SCOLA uses the guardian email and phone number on file in Infinite campus and the student's school email to communicate. It is the responsiblity of the parent/guardian to communicate any changes to the SCOLA office.
I understand that if my child wishes to participate in school sponsored extra curricular activities, I must reach out to their districted school for that information.
I understand that tutoring/intervention sessions (Zoom or In-person) may be required for SCOLA students who are not making adequate progress.
I understand that tutoring/intervention sessions (Zoom or In-person) may be required for SCOLA students who are not making adequate progress.
I understand that SCOLA students who are not academically successful may be required to return to in-person learning at the discretion of SCOLA administration.
Students and parents can expect...
SCOLA will develop and explain the SCOLA process and expectations so that students and parents can make informed decisions when choosing to participate in virtual school.
Your student's assigned teacher/mentor will be available during scheduled hours (as communicated) to provide academic assistance, when needed.
If the student has an active 504 Plan or IEP, the district will help determine if the accommodations and support can be delivered virtually or if they will have to be modified.
SCOLA staff will monitor the progress and academic performance of each student. Students may be required to participate in intervention sessions when academic performance is poor.
