ENL

Students who are new to New York State and are learning English as a New Language (ENL) are required to take the New York State placement test called the NYSITELL.   All four modalities are assessed (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and the five levels are entering, emerging, transitioning, expanding, and commanding.  The level at which a student is placed determines the amount of minutes of ENL services the student will receive, and the classes in which the student is scheduled.  All of our ENL courses help students to prepare for New York State exams.  In the Spring, the students will take the NYSESLAT, allowing a student to demonstrate his/her growth.  A new placement for the following school year is based on the NYSESLAT score
