Purpose and Graduation Requirements

World Languages Pathway Assessment +1 Requirements:

The World Language Comprehensive Exam (formerly “LOTE”) is designed to be completed after students complete three units of study (six credits) of World Languages coursework, aligned to Checkpoint B of the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages. Note, however, that course credit is not required for students to sit for the exam as a department-approved pathway assessment.

For students planning to use a State-approved World Language Comprehensive exam as a +1 option for a local or Regents diploma, schools should determine whether students have acquired the proficiency necessary to be successful on the exam. For some students, more than three units may be necessary, for native speakers fewer or possibly no units may be necessary.

Graduation Requirements:

To earn a Regents or local diploma, students must earn at least two course credits in World Languages. These credits may be in the same language or in different languages as long as students earn at least one full unit of credit per language.

To earn an advanced Regents diploma, students must earn six credits in the same language and pass the corresponding NYCDOE World Language Comprehensive exam or NYSED-approved World Language exam.
