As part of New York State’s transition to the NGSS-aligned Biology Regents, I helped plan and facilitate a two-day professional development training hosted at Tottenville High School for all Biology teachers across District 31. The training focused on three newly state-mandated labs: For the Birds, Balancing Act, and Unraveling the Mystery of Lactose Tolerance.
Over the course of the PD, I led sessions that included detailed walkthroughs of lab procedures, facilitated collaborative planning and poster activities, and supported educators in developing classroom-ready materials and strategies. A major focus of the training was on equity and accessibility, with ENL experts providing targeted modifications to support English Language Learners and other diverse student needs.
I also contributed to the creation and distribution of instructional resources, including lab packets, exemplar student work, reference slides, and genetic modeling tools. In addition to guiding content exploration, I supported structured reflection sessions where teachers discussed how to integrate the labs into their curriculum and shared best practices with peers.
This experience not only strengthened my own instructional leadership, but also contributed to a unified, district-wide approach to implementing NGSS Biology labs in preparation for the updated Regents exam.
Here is the documented evidence of the teacher's work.
At the beginning of the year, we will assess students' foundational lab skills to gauge their level of understanding and identify areas that may need more focused attention. This assessment will help us tailor our teaching approach to best support each student's needs.
