IEP teams are able to make Assistive Technology determinations without formal assessments. For best practice, the Central Assistive Technology Team has developed the following AT Consideration Checklist for Communication (AT-CCC) to guide school staff. This encourages review of all supports being provided to the student to address the student's current communication goals.
We suggest that this document be completed collaboratively by all members of the IEP Team, which includes the parent/guardian and the student. A formal AAC evaluation (for AT) may still be submitted in cases where the IEP team may require one, and please note: even without an assessment, the AT team is available to support IEP teams at any point during the consideration and determination process through a consult..
In completing these documents, you are requesting an IEP MANDATED DEVICE, and the student's IEP must be updated to reflect this.
