Educators will explore cultural practices, community values, and common challenges faced by Haitian families, equipping them with the tools to foster a more inclusive and effective learning environment. Through interactive discussions and real-world case studies, these workshops aim to enhance educators' cultural understanding and improve student outcomes within this vibrant community.

Community Financial Justice for Multilingual and Immigrant Families

The New Economy Project in partnership with Office of Multilingual Learners will present a three-part workshop series on community financial justice, focusing on low-income and immigrant New Yorkers' rights in our banking and credit systems. Sessions will feature maps, case examples, and discussions on topics such as banking inequality, predatory lending, and financial technology; cooperative and community-led alternatives to banks; credit reports; debt collection; and more. Presenters will share timely information about people's rights and options with respect to opening bank accounts, establishing credit histories, and avoiding debt traps -- as well as resources for free legal assistance and other support.

Mindset Matters

In partnership with Families in Schools, the Office of Multilingual Learners will host a two-part series on mindsets. For educators working with families, mindset is a pivotal factor in fostering effective and positive relationships. How can you engage and re-engage with the families at your school site? To build trust with your students and their families, it's imperative to take a critical look at the biases we hold and the perspectives we have about our students and their families. This institute will ask participants to practice moving from a deficit-based perspective to an asset-based perspective, highlight the importance of funds of knowledge, and open the space for honest dialogue and conversations.

Office of Multilingual Learners and the DEIB team will host a two-part series focused on strategies and tools for culturally responsive engagement with students and families. The first session will center teachers and school staff supporting educators and their school communities to build and sustain culturally and linguistically responsive schools for multilingual and immigrant families. The second session will focus on strengthening and sustaining School Leadership Teams and Equity Teams with multilingual and immigrant students and families in mind.
