In the 7th & 8th grade bands, our second-year players continue their band journey. Students will refine their instrumental technique and tackle more music that is more technically challenging and musically expressive.
In 7th and 8th grade, woodwinds, brass, and percussion are combined. They rehearse and perform as a full wind band.
All of our hard work culminates a number of performances throughout the year. The Jackson Heights Halloween parade on Halloween, the Winter Concert in January, the Spring Concert in May, and the Queens Pride Parade in June.
Performing arts High Schools like LaGuardia High School (Manhattan), Frank Sinatra High School (Queens), Talent Unlimited High School (Manhattan) Special Music School (Manhattan), and others require a prepared audition for acceptance.
In January, 7th graders will begin preparing for their auditions.
In the summer before 8th grade, students can participate in a free Department of Education program to prepare for their auditions.
In September, 8th graders finalize their prepared solo and audition skills for auditions in October and November.

Practice outside of class is a crucial part of every student’s progress. Our homework requires students to practice at least TWICE per week outside of class. Twenty minutes, twice a week will change their playing. Students will have, many times personalized, practice tasks to help them improve. Often these tasks will later become quizzes.
Students may practice before school, after school, during lunch, or at home.
Pick up your instrument at dismissal and return it the next day you have class.
