7th & 8th Grade Bands are performing at the Jackson Heights Halloween Parade on 10/31.
In the 6th grade band, our first-year players begin our band journey. We'll first find the perfect instrument for them by taking the time to try all nine 6th grade instruments. We then begin to read music, build our technique on our instruments, and make music.
In the 6th grade, Mr. Diefenbach teaches the woodwind/percussion classes and Mr. Genova teaches the brass classes
All of our hard work culminates with the Spring Concert in May and the Queens Pride Parade in June!

September: Students are exposed to and choose their Art/Music class.
October: Students try each instrument and choose their instrument to study.
November: Students will learn and practice fundamentals of music notation and tone production.
December-June: Students will learn to read and perform new concepts such as:
Progressive instrumental technique exercises to build finger and embouchure dexterity, hand coordination, and musicianship.
Notes of the concert Bb or Eb Scale
Rhythms up through eighth-notes and rests
Short unison songs to more complex arrangements that require increased independence
Practice outside of class is a crucial part of every student’s progress. Our homework requires students to practice at least twice per week outside of class. One of these sessions must be with a band teacher. It's tough for a beginning player to practice efficiently on their own.
Students will have, many times personalized, practice tasks to help them improve. Often these tasks will later become quizzes.
We are unable to hold lunch practice in the annex building.
Students will be able to take instruments home later in the year.
In the Annex:
After school, students report to room 411 to practice with Mr. Genova
In the Main Building:
Students take their instrument with them after class.
After dismissal, students report to the cafe and will then cross safely to the main building with the after-school program students.
Students will practice in the auditorium with Mr. Diefenbach.
After practicing, you'll be dismissed home or to their after-school program.
The teachers will bring your instruments back to the annex for you.
