Career exploration opportunities increase your knowledge and awareness about various career paths. Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunities provide you with real-life work experiences so you can develop and improve academic and technical skills to enhance overall employability.

The YAC will participate in organization-wide decision-making, working closely with their Board of Directors and staff. In addition, the YAC will have space to dream up and implement its own initiatives to advance Vocal Justice’s mission. YAC members are accompanied by adult allies and will attend 2-hour meetings twice a month to discuss Vocal Justice Program ideas, give feedback on Vocal Justice’s budget, and brainstorm ways to engage fellow young people. In between meetings, YAC members will work on projects that amplify youth voices in education and their communities.
All YAC members will receive a $1500 stipend for their work between December 2022 and June 2023. Work schedule will be determined based on YAC members interests, availability, and working styles. YAC members may be able to extend their time with Vocal Justice through summer 2023 and the following school year, depending on how work goes this school year.

The Ranger Conservation Corps is a great urban environmental internship for high school students who are interested in the natural world or environmental issues.
The Ranger Conservation Corps interns gain experience while working with the Urban Park Rangers on environmental restoration in natural areas in their flagship parks. Participants may go on exciting field trips including canoeing, overnight camping, and more. Interns receive community service hours, and the experience looks great on a college application!
We offer two Ranger Conservation Corps sessions each year (in the fall and spring), and each session lasts approximately eight (8) weeks. The program occurs one day a week, on a school day afternoon for 2 to 2.5 hours.

Join like-minded high school students in exploring new careers in law, government and politics. The club meets 2-3 times a month via Zoom with guest speakers who have already established themselves in their respective careers. There will be opportunities to hear the life experiences of lawyers, judges and court officials, ask questions and receive advice on how to appropriately strive for similar success in the future. In the club, students build knowledge on higher education, job applications, interview skills and the lifestyles of those in the professions they’re interested in. Henry Street Settlement’s Making Money Matter is a program focusing on financial resilience and community empowerment. Participating students learn personal finance and entrepreneurship skills that prepare them for a summer creating promotional materials for small businesses in the Lower East Side. The program begins March 01, 2021- June 02, and takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 pm- 6:00 pm.

The Training Opportunities Program (TOP) supports high school students gain real world work experience. These experiences also provide our students with critical work readiness and life skills.
You must have an IEP in order to apply.
Students will be chosen through a lottery.
You must work a total of 15 hours between December 6th and May 6th.

To enroll in a college credit course, you must be a junior or a senior in a NYC public high school in the Spring Semester 2023 (January 28, 2023- May 26, 2023) and demonstrate that you meet the criteria listed below.
Please review the eligibility requirements before submitting your application:
480 on the Verbal section of the SAT or at least a 75 on the English Language Arts Regents or at least a 50 on the Verbal section of the PSAT.
At least a 480 on the Mathematics section of the SAT or at least a 70 on the Common Core Algebra 1/Geometry Regents or at least 50 on the Math section of the PSAT.
Students who have not taken the Regents must have an overall high school GPA of 75

This is a fun and exciting opportunity that allows students to get work based learning experience while making new connections with professionals that will guide them from sophomore year until graduation. Students will be paired with a mentor from a well know organization to learn career readiness skills such as networking, resume building, and workplace etiquette. Students meet with their mentor twice each month during the school year. Students are eligible to join beginning sophomore year.

AmeriCorps members will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self image in all young people at Grand Street Settlement sites. Group Leader Assistants will promote and develop a safe and engaging learning environment for youth by leading youth in recreational activities, team building exercises and games, theme based lessons and trips.

The Expanded Horizons College Success program at Henry Street Settlement is a comprehensive eight-year program designed to ensure that high school students are college-ready. All grades are eligible to participate.

The NYPD is looking for students who are interested in discussing ways to improve the community and take ownership over the issues that they and their peers want to address. The council is a platform for students to have their voice heard, share ideas with one another, and help their communities. Ladders for Leaders provides paid professional internships to NYC youth between the ages of 16 and 21. Applicants are evaluated based on academic performance, response to essay questions, and résumé quality. First Strokes - a not-for-profit - organization that offers free swim lessons for high schoolers in NYC who never had the opportunity to learn to swim before. ACE GNY is a free after-school mentorship program for high school students to learn about careers in architecture, engineering, and construction management.
Students join teams led by professional architects, engineers, and construction managers to gain firsthand experience in the design and construction industry.
During sessions, students learn how to use design software, go on office tours and field trips, and participate in fun hands-on activities to learn more about the different career options.
ACE GNY is a full year program, operating from early November through May. During the first half of the year, students learn about each discipline and how they interact to develop projects. Then, the team develops a cohesive mock design project that they present in May.

High school students help CityScience fulfill its mission in a number of ways. Each internship is geared towards the schedule and interests of the student. One third of the student’s time spent at CityScience provides real world office experience while the rest of the time is dedicated to a topic of the student’s choice. He or she will do necessary research to create an annotated bibliography that provides valuable resources for curriculum writers such as projects, videos, vocabulary words, local experts, etc.
High school students are encouraged to reflect on their science education because they are often the best judges of engaging content. Students with a passion for science have a chance to spark their specific science interest through:
Proposing topics, activities, and field trips for future City Science projects
Researching engaging videos, content, and social media for classroom use by our coaches

The Possibility Project is a youth-led program that uses the performing arts, leadership development, and community engagement to empower teenagers to change their lives and communities. In the program, youth will learn narrative writing, recording, music and beat-making, and sound production skills, as well as build relationships across differences, resolve conflicts, and develop their abilities as leaders -- all while creating an original podcast musical drama together.
The program is free and open to any young person between the ages of 13 and 19 who wants to change the. No previous performing experience is necessary whatsoever, and no one is ever accepted based on talent. The possibility project will meet on Zoom on Saturdays from 12:00-4:00pm, October 2021 to May 2022, with monthly in-person meetups outdoors to keep our community safe.
