Welcome to the Special Education Evaluation Process Page
As the Director of Special Education for St. Croix Falls, I am committed to ensuring that every child receives the support and services they need to succeed. The evaluation process is a critical step in identifying students who may require special education services and determining the best ways to support their educational journey. This page provides an overview of the evaluation process, offering insights and guidance for parents, guardians, and educators.
Understanding the Evaluation Process
The special education evaluation process is designed to gather comprehensive information, about a student's strengths and needs. This process helps determine eligibility for special education services and informs the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) tailored to the student's unique needs.
Steps in the Evaluation Process
Referral for Evaluation
A referral for evaluation can be initiated by a parent, teacher, or other school personnel if there are concerns about a student's academic, behavioral, or developmental progress.
Interventions may need to be put into place
Parents must provide written consent for the evaluation to proceed.
Review of Existing Data
The evaluation team reviews existing information about the student, including academic records, observations, and any prior assessments.
This helps to identify specific areas of concern and determine the types of assessments needed.
Comprehensive Assessment
The student undergoes a series of assessments tailored to their suspected areas of need. These may include academic testing, psychological evaluations, speech and language assessments, and other specialized evaluations.
Assessments are conducted by qualified professionals and are designed to be non-discriminatory and culturally responsive.
Eligibility Determination
Once the assessments are complete, the evaluation team, including parents and educators, reviews the results to determine if the student qualifies for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Eligibility is based on the presence of a disability that adversely affects the student's educational performance and the need for specially designed instruction.
Development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP)
If the student is found eligible, an IEP team meeting is scheduled to develop a personalized education plan.
The IEP outlines specific goals, services, accommodations, and supports needed to address the student's unique needs.
Implementation and Monitoring
The IEP is implemented by the student's educational team, and progress is monitored regularly.
The IEP team meets at least annually to review and update the plan as necessary, ensuring that the student continues to receive appropriate support.
Your Role in the Evaluation Process
Parents and guardians play a crucial role in the evaluation process. Your insights, observations, and active participation are invaluable in developing an accurate and comprehensive understanding of your child's needs. We encourage you to ask questions, share your concerns, and work collaboratively with our team to support your child's educational journey.
