Starting this year, Santa Cruz Catholic School will be utilizing MusicplayOnline by Theme & Variations which is a leading digital music curriculum provider. All students will be able to access the site with a generic student login which you can use now to take a look at resources.
Regular Grade Level lesson materials, plans, and resources will be readily available as older weekly lessons will be archived for reviewing.

The main focuses for 1st and 2nd grades will be cultural music exploration such as African drumming/singing, body percussion, Latin American traditional singing/dancing, American Folk music, line dances, and mixed percussion incorporation throughout the year. Music literacy and history will be emphasized throughout the year to prepare students for the more formalized vocal and instrument studies in upper elementary.
The main focuses for 3rd and 4th grades will be a summative review PK3-2nd grade general music curriculum as well as the addition of music theory/history, Orff and Kodaly performance arrangements, and a major focus on the Recorder Flute and the Recorder Karate Music Curriculum. Students can “check out” classroom recorders or purchase their own ($4-7 average pricing).

Multimedia Production and Broadcast Journalism: classroom instruction on various student-based RTD projects (Radio/Television/Digital Communication) which will include the media production of the Santa Cruz Catholic School Digital Broadcast: The Cardinal Crest Network (CCN). Students will manage their own research and report on school/local/national news events in addition to learning how to edit, troubleshoot, and upload audio/video recordings to school data drive.

Spring: class guitar beginner instruction such as guitar notation, chord charts, melodic improvisation/soloing, basic blues/rock progressions, instrument maintenance and tuning, and songwriting. Approaches will include acoustic rhythm playing, electric guitar techniques, mariachi traditional techniques, and classical fingerpicking methods. Additional instruments will be incorporated including bass guitar and latin american folk instruments. Students can “check out” guitar or purchase their own ($80-160 average pricing; Loog or Fender recommended).

Winter-Music Technology: classroom instruction on computer/iPad technology applications and group/independent piano study. Students will master beginner editing/composition music software using Garageband and Audacity in order to create music projects of which will be uploaded to their student youtube channel as well as utilized as sound bytes for the student broadcast, The Cardinal Crest Network (CCN).
Spring-Piano Lab: The piano lab portion will consist of learning classical and contemporary pieces in a group setting with independent practice time in addition to having piano composition projects. Piano techniques will include Suzuki, Left Hand Chord Accompaniment, Lead Sheet reading, and weekly performance checks from piano workbooks.
