SCASD Virtual Academy

SCASD has offered a Virtual Academy option for secondary students for over 10 years. This option provides flexibility for families by offering some self-paced learning with support provided by SCASD teachers. Teachers in the virtual school will regularly check in with students, answer questions, reteach and provide supplemental instruction as needed, and grade student work. There will be weekly synchronous class meetings. Our Virtual Academy course offerings may be different than the in-person course offerings depending on the content area. District Chromebooks will be provided to students in the Virtual Academy.

Students in the virtual school will receive a SCASD diploma and have access to:

  • Clubs and activities

  • Sports

  • School functions

  • Libraries

  • VIPs tutoring

  • SCASD student supports such as the Math Help Center

The Virtual Academy will run on a semester-based schedule. At the end of the semester, students enrolled in the Virtual Academy may return to in-person SCASD classes. Making the change at the semester break allows for the smoothest transition and continuity of learning.

Our teachers will use Edgenuity, a digital platform, and Canvas, our current online learning management system, to facilitate online learning. Additionally, teachers will use video conferencing and email for regular meetings and communication to stay connected with students.

If your family is considering the Virtual Academy and your child is enrolled in a CTC program, please contact the Director of the CTC, Dr. Ben Mordan, at 814-272-8454 to discuss options.
