In third grade students begin to apply their growing knowledge of music to ensemble work. Starting in third grade, students have Orchestra or Band in addition to our General Music class. In my class, students reinforce their learning of instruments by learning to play recorders as well as xylophones, metalophones and glockenspiels. Many of the concepts that students were exposed to in prior grades (articulation, dynamics, tempo, etc.) come back now in a more hands-on way as we play songs on these new instruments. Emphasis is placed on finding roles that we enjoy playing within an ensemble context and expressing individual creativity while supporting one another within a group. Students write lyrics for an original group project and accompany themselves and each other on instruments.
