In first grade students continue to focus on these basic concepts, but in greater depth than we did in Kindergarten:
Short/long (rhythm, also articulation)
Students begin to name and read quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests, playing rhythms that contain them on hand drums, egg shakers, woodblocks and other percussion instruments. They play along with recordings of famous pieces by composers like Mozart and Percy Grainger, as well as accompany their own singing.
Students play simple song-games developing collaborative, community-building skills such as sharing and turn-taking, as well as physical coordination. These songs further provide age-appropriate material for students to analyze on a musical level. Many song-games contain the pitches sol, mi and la, which form the basis of beginning melodic literacy.
Students also explore their own creativity, inventing original lyrics for familiar songs, and learning about rhymes and poetic verse structures used in song writing.
