In second grade students continue to refine their understanding of concepts introduced in prior years along with some new additions:
Instruments of the Orchestra
Short/long (rhythm, also articulation)
Song Form: AB, ABA, Rondo
The song-games that second graders learn and play are increasingly more complex, often involving circle/partner dances, and passing or clapping games that engage their growing physical coordination. The songs that accompany these games also contain melodies that have new notes in them: re and do, and rhythms that contain different combinations of sixteenth notes, as well as half notes. Consequently, students learn how to read and write these new melodies and rhythms through games like Poison Rhythm, Sneaky Snake and Steal the Bacon. These games are designed to help students practice their mastery of musical concepts through fun, engaging activities that also help them develop positive habits around collaboration, teamwork and healthy competition.
