Dadaism influenced me and I hope to influence the future.
I would've never expected Experimental Arts would have taken me down this road for my final project. One thing that stuck with me for this class was the saying I said which was "Are we just going to listen to things people find trash?" And from there, as I developed a better understanding of the material and direction in which the artists were going, I realized that this idea of trash isn't the work, but the reception and environment in which the work is presented. It was trash because people weren't used to it.
The way this project is presented comes from conceptual art. I learned that everything is art so I felt free and creative in doing something writing based. It allowed me to control the presentation and flow more.
Now the real influence of this project was the Dada Movement and people like Marcel Duchamp. The Dada movement was a political movement that would closely resemble leftist politics today. Marcel Duchamp was a leader of the Dada art movement who focused more on the future than he did the present when it came to art. During the time of Dada were events like the World Wars or Great Depression, events people have never experienced. Marcel Duchamp believed that people during his time wouldn't understand his artwork so he invested his art for the future by creating something he knew people wouldn't like right now. You can kind of see where this is going as to why my project is what it is.
But just in case you don't, I felt like it was necessary to do my project on a crazy year such as 2020. We are in the midst of a pandemic and this is something completely new to us. On top of that 2020 was a very important year that revealed hard truth's about our country and the world. Our way of life was disrupted and I wanted to cover that. I wanted to play a Marcel Duchamp like role and be a pillar of influence for the future. Most people now would disagree with the things I said here and I think that's perfectly fine because I also believe in what I feel about the present. I felt like the times sort of paralleled each other and I also wanted to express how I felt during this time in the pandemic.
I never knew art could be anything or also have so much influence, and that's what I learned in this class and that's what I hoped to show.
