For Service Learning Term, the Big Picture program split into three groups - Precious Plastics (working with The Generator to build a shredder that grinds plastic to be melted and reused), Veterans Affairs (to create an interactive video exhibitions that displays the narratives of veterans at the Veterans Memorial Park on Dorset Street), and Vulnerable Pollinators (the group I was in). I've always been incredibly fascinated by bees and their behavior, so I was excited to embark on a community service project under the objective to assist bees and work to help resolve the issue of their population decline.
To do this, we conducted our own research and worked with community partners to directly assist them in building rehabilitative environments for pollinators. We worked with Jon Turner at Wild Roots farm, John Haden at The Farm Between, Bill Mayers at The Intervale Community Farm, and two PhD candidates who are researching bee population decline. To learn more about my experience and education during this term's community service work with our partners, read my Personal Narrative below.
