CLay Work

Clay sculpture is an strong area of focus within our three-dimensional program. Students learn all traditional clay forming techniques and synthesize that knowledge into projects that foster observation, creativity, and industry application.

Mixed Media

The exploration of using found objects and non-traditional sculpture materials combined with traditional materials like clay, plaster, and wood always result in exciting and creative results.

Special Projects

Students in the VAPA ACADEMY have been sought out by community members and businesses to take on exciting special projects.

Sculpture Focus

Sculpture classes are designed around the idea that students will learn about Sculpture by looking at sculptures, discussing and reading about sculptures, and actually creating their own sculptures. We look at why artists make sculptures as well as the wide varieties of materials artists use for their artworks. Methods and techniques that Sculpture I students learn about and apply include modeling and construction with clay, assemblages with wood and found materials, basic carving, manipulating wire for armatures and building up forms withPlaster and Sculptamold, and constructing with chipboard. Students learn about and apply concepts learned about color mixing and color theory and they use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to plan and organize their artwork. Students are introduced to the wide range of art-related careers that are out in the world to explore and pursue. Connections are made throughout the course showing the interconnections between art and other academic disciplines as well as the role and value of art in our everyday lives and society. Materials and supplies are provided for the studio projects and students get to keep everything that they create!

Ceramics Focus

Ceramics classes provide a comprehensive study in methods of clay sculpture, hand-built clay construction and wheel throwing techniques. Students explore three-dimensional design while developing both useful and sculptural clay forms. Creativity and quality craftsmanship are emphasized.
