Choral-Vocal Arts Program

The Arroyo Valley Choir is an award winning program with students that are eager to develop their vocal talents and grow as musicians. The Program consists of two class periods, after class workshops and independent studies. The class periods; Concert Choir and Advanced Choir are the main groups at Arroyo. Concert Choir is a class designed to assist young and beginning students the opportunity to learn how to sing, understand music as an art form, and develop their personal skills in vocal arts as an emergent musician and artist. These students are usually first time singers and/or first time choristers. The Advanced Choir class is for 10th, 11th and a2th grade students that have had at least one year of high school choir. The performance level of this class is moderate to advanced by California State standards. These students’ are screened to assess their musical aptitude, understanding and their theoretical knowledge of music. They must maintain a 2.0 GPA to perform with the ensemble of campus. One of the focus goals of this program is to instill, develop, support, and encourage the individual student with the skills of vocal performance and exposure of a varied repertoire from across music genres. The rigor in this class grows significantly each year resulting in an individual musical presentation by students by the end of their four year choral journey.

The after school workshops are mainly individualized focus on the goals of a specific student. In these lessons, the student is assisted in the development of a solo repertoire of many genres and the students are prepared to audition for scholarships, summer arts programs, and University Music Degree Programs. These students learn how to design a professional musician’s resumé, and what to expect at college level and professional auditions. Each year students participate in the San Bernardino Rotary Music Scholarship competition and others similar. Arroyo Valley vocal arts students have gone on to win solo competitions, pursued professional music careers and college 2 and 4 year degrees both local and afar. As a music educator I am very proud of the accomplishments my students have made.
