Year 2
Culturally Responsive Education
On November 5, 2019, the Sayville school district introduced the concept of culturally responsive and sustaining education to their school body. Afterwards, a small group of educators came together to create a plan to include more educators, and more grade levels in this work.
Planning for the Future
In Winter 2019-20, educators from the Sayville Consortium came together to create specific goals and activities for the grant. After a fun speed-network icebreaker, educators worked together to brainstorm ideas about having students from different districts engage meaningfully with each other using the Rapid Prototyping method. This Winter work is noted below.
Year 3
Highlighted Student Programs
The programs highlighted below as examples of student activities from around the country. Some of these programs focus on increasing awareness of self and others, others include events that allow for discussion and Q&A, and some are more structured sessions like after school clubs focused on empowering youth through service activities.
Advisory Period
Some schools and districts include an advisory period in their schedule. This 10-15 minute session is meant as a time for students to talk freely about what is happening in their lives, or their world. This is different than a guidance session in that they have a small group of peers who attend with them.
Talk It Out Tuesday
Talk It Out Tuesday can be an addition to an advisory or guidance period. It is meant to spark interest and conversation on a particular day of the week.

Unity Circle Advisory
The Unity Circle Advisory is comprised of students and staff who work to encourage new student connections, network with national organizations and universities, provide a welcoming, inclusive, safe learning environment , and maintain a themed showcase in the main hallway to celebrate diversity, bring awareness and encourage unity and kindness. This after school program offers students a chance to learn about different cultures and backgrounds through multiple modalities such as short videos, articles, and Skype and guest speakers
Leadership Circle
This program brings together students to discuss important topics that are relevant to them. A session might include the following: Lead students do research on a specific topic, teach others about it, and facilitate discussion about it in a safe space with adults.
Highlighted Events for Students
The following events took place with students, teachers and administrators (some across the three districts) during the Spring of 2021.

Myles Dias
Governance Administrator at Dell Technologies
JOB INFO
Company: Dell Technologies
Title: Governance Administrator
What I do: My responsibilities can be generalized as ensuring that our dashboards (or ticketing system) are accurate, up to date, and helpful to our daily operations. I also ensure that we are allocating an appropriate amount of resources to our product lines. After hours, I help students of color from my Alma Mater, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, apply for and get hired to positions within the corporation.
PERSONAL INFO
Name: Myles Dias
Hometown: New Bedford, MA
Race: Black - Cape Verdean
Education Level: Master's Degree, MS in Technology Management
History: As a small child I equated diverty, equity, and inclusion to a box of crayons. Every child I knew wanted to have the largest box with the most colors. Diverty was important in that ordeal, but I was keenly aware that the same was not true when it came to humans. Growing up in advanced academic programs I often found myself as the lone minority in my classroom. That was especially true when I attended a private catholic school. I was subjected to racist statements and racist treament. I came to resent the lack of diversity and the accompanying problems. This was all magnified with the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012 following my junior year of high school. I made it a point to attend rallies, educate and expose others, learn about my own heritage, and be a leader for the next generation. I helped found the UMass Dartmouth NAACP, participate in Dell's Black Networking Alliance and Changing the Face of Tech diversity program, make frequent appearances in Ms. Lindskog's Unity Circle meetings, volunteer with Big Brother Big Sister as a big brother, and serve on the Cape VErdean Recognition Committee
Y1 Y2 and Y3 Curriculum Maps
In addition to training faculty, holding CLR meetings for students, and building its websites to provide support for their school community, Sayville has worked on making their curriculum more accessible and has increased the use of simulations and other culturally responsive strategies to address the needs of multiple types of learners. Please visit the Curriculum Maps page to view updated curriculum maps, lessons, and assessments for Science and Math.
