The Hunger Games
(3-Book Series)
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weight survival against humanity and life against love.
Radiohead
Subterranean Homesick Alien
2016
This song is about a person that fantasizes about being abducted by aliens to escape the misery of his life on earth. He dreams about seeing the stars and the meaning of life, but society would "shut him away," symbolizing their closed-mindedness and cold hearts. "I'm just uptight" is perhaps a deceiving lyric, since the person is not truly uptight - he's just different than other people because he wants to find spiritual truth while others do not.
The Platform (Netflix)
2019
Rated NC-17
The film is set in a large, tower-style "Vertical Self-Management Center". In the future, prisoners housed in vertical cells watch as inmates in the upper cells are fed while those below starve. Its residents, who are switched every 30 days between its many floors, are fed via a platform which, initially filled with food at the top floor, gradually descends through the tower's levels, stopping for a fixed amount of time on each. The system inevitably leads to conflict, as the residents at the top levels get to eat as much as they can, with each level getting only the leftovers from the previous ones.
