What Is the Difference Between a Graphic Novel and Manga?
Graphic Novels
Origin: Primarily from Western countries.
Art Style: Varied, often more realistic.
Reading Direction: Left to right.
Themes: Can cover a wide range of genres and often target adult audiences with complex and mature themes1.
Format: Usually longer, standalone stories or a series of stories.
Manga
Origin: Japan.
Art Style: Distinctive, often characterized by exaggerated expressions and dynamic action sequences.
Reading Direction: Right to left, mimicking traditional Japanese writing.
Themes: Also covers a wide range of genres, but often categorized by target audience (e.g., Shonen for young boys, Shojo for young girls, Seinen for adult men, etc.)2.
Format: Often serialized in magazines before being collected into volumes.
Both Graphic Novels and Manga are forms of sequential art that tell stories through a combination of illustrations and text, but they differ in cultural origin, art style, and reading direction
