In French I, basic conversational and communication skills are developed. Students learn to express themselves in a variety of situations. Topics include greeting people, introducing oneself, talking about friends and family, ordering in a cafe, discussing daily activities and leisure pastimes, describing where one lives, and shopping. In addition to language, students begin to study the people and culture of France and French-speaking countries.

In the second year of French, students further develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The student’s progress and creativity are shown in dialogues and simple compositions. The reading selections develop cultural themes, focusing on the customs and traditions of French-speaking people who live in France, Canada, Europe and Africa.

In French III, students review basic grammar and learn more advanced structures and vocabulary. Communication, reading and writing skills are expanded. Students learn to communicate on a variety of topics useful when traveling abroad and increase their awareness of the Francophone world.

In French 4, students will increase their global awareness and engagement through the study of the language, literature and culture of France and the francophone world. Students will use French effectively in reflective interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication about course topics. Units based on AP themes organize the course thematically. Topics include Family and Community, Beauty and Aesthetics, Everyday Life, World Challenges, and Identity. Through the study of authentic readings, short stories, literature, film and online resources in French, students will gain insights into the French language and will make comparisons between their own culture and that of the francophone world.
Dual credit option: This course can be taken for dual-credit through the College Credit in High School(CCIHS) program at UW-Green Bay. Find information about CCIHS at https://www.uwgb.edu/ccihs/. This is an OPTION for this course, but not a requirement. Seniors who successfully complete the course with an "A" or a "B" (83% or better) will earn 11 retroactive credits from UWGB and 3 credits for the 202 language course from UWGB, for a total of 14 college credits for high-school language study.

French 5
French 5 is a one-trimester elective aimed at building and maintaining advanced language and cultural proficiency and college readiness. In French 5, students will continue to explore thematic units centered on the question, Ẅhat does it mean to be a member of a French-speaking community today?” Through language study, literature and film, students will explore in greater depth AP themes and will use technology to communicate with students from our partner school in France.

Spanish is spoken from the very first day and the frequency of spoken Spanish in the classroom will increase throughout the year. The student’s progress and creativity are shown in dialogues and skits presented in class. In addition to the language, students study the people and cultures of Spain and Latin America and become more aware of life-styles and ideas different from their own. Cultural differences are learned through a variety of situations.

In the second year of Spanish, students continue to expand their vocabulary. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are further developed. Students present skits, dialogues and short speeches and speak Spanish in the classroom. Writing skills are further developed as students write short stories, compositions and letters in Spanish.

In Spanish III the communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are further developed. Most of the class is conducted in Spanish. At this level, students are encouraged to continue using their creativity to enhance their grasp of the Spanish language. Students continue learning to communicate using vocabulary expansion, short stories, good grammar, writing, and speaking in class. Students will view authentic films in Spanish and will continue to write short stories and compositions.

Recommended Course: Spanish IV
This class is designed to prepare students for college-level Spanish courses. It will use literature and a college text to deliver vocabulary and grammar. Many of the literary selections are from AP recommended reading lists of leading Hispanic writers. These works lead to discussion of universal literary themes, as well as culture and history specific to several Spanish-speaking regions. Students present information to demonstrate understanding and refine speaking skills. Nearly all speaking done by students will be in Spanish AND is supported in a positive and criticism-free environment emphasizing second language acquisition as a long-term process. Improvement of conversational skills on a daily basis is highly emphasized in this course.

This course will expand on the introduction to cultures initiated in the regular Spanish curriculum. It will explore more deeply the lives, worldviews, and attitudes of Spanish-speakers as well as their countries´ relationships with the United States. Authentic sources are used and very minimal homework is assigned, as students will often be taking level 4 or 5 Spanish concurrently with this course.

This course is intended for students taking a study-abroad trip through the school. We will study the country of travel in depth, including what a homestay entails, how to exchange money and get around, what the family structure looks like, what customs they practice and what types of food they eat. The goal of this class is to help students prepare for the trip and gain confidence, so that they can make the most out of their experience.
