Writer's Workshop

Students participate in Writers' Workshop daily. This is a time when they develop the ability to express their ideas and thoughts through words and pictures. Students will learn to write about their opinions, life experiences, and knowledge.

The act of writing contains two distinct parts:

  1. The writing process

  2. Writing mechanics

The Writing Process

The writing processes we will focus on this year are:

  • Personal Narratives

  • Small Moment Narratives

  • Opinion Writing/How-To Texts

  • Fact Writing

  • We will also explore letter writing and poetry

Writing Mechanics

Skills students will develop throughout the year are:

  • Using a capital letter to start a sentence

  • Using spaces between words

  • Using punctuation to end sentences (. ? !)

  • Developing the ability to use inventive spelling as they practice and acquire the rules and patterns of conventional spelling
