Reader's Workshop

First Graders will learn reading strategies through participation in the following reading components:

  • Read Aloud - Students listen to a story and develop comprehension strategies.

  • Shared Reading - Students read a big book or shared text as a group. Students develop both decoding and comprehension strategies.

  • Guided Reading - Students are instructed in small groups with books at their individual reading levels. Students develop strategies for decoding and comprehending text.

  • Independent Reading - Students read a variety of books independently. This is an opportunity for students to use the reading strategies learned during the other reading components.

  • Partner Reading - Students read to a partner, listen to a partner read, read together, provide feedback and discuss books.

During Readers' Workshop, students will also have the opportunity to conference with a teacher, read with a partner, or a small group, and write a response to text.
