Homework

First Grade Homework

Our classroom homework will consist of a monthly homework choice board that reinforces and supports concepts learned in school, while also including some fun activities for students to complete. Homework choice boards will be sent home at the beginning of each month, in your child's take home folder, starting in October. Please have your child complete several choices throughout the month. You do not have to return the choice board to class.

I also recommend nightly reading to increase your child’s fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development. Your child can read to you and/or you can read to your child.

If you feel like you would like additional work for your child, the following activities can be practice at home:

Math:

  • review math topics

  • compare and order numbers

  • identify and count coins

  • estimate

  • addition and subtraction facts to 18

  • skip count by twos, fives, tens

  • word problems

  • identify geometric shapes

  • fractions

  • telling time

Literacy:

  • practice reading the Fundations trick words

  • practice spelling the Fundations trick words

  • write stories and letters

  • read a book from home or a book sent from school

  • make predictions about a story

  • make connections to a story

  • identify the main character, setting and problem/solution of a story

  • discuss feelings and opinions about a story

Using Technology:

  • Choose an educational app or website from the list that will be sent home during the first week of school (please ask for another list if you cannot locate the original).
