5th Grade Eel Project

B-WET (Bay Watershed Education and Training) through-

UNH Cooperative Extension and the NH Sea Grant

Our 5th graders are in year two of the Eel Project with the team from UNH Cooperative Extension and the NH Sea Grant. Students have the unique opportunity to explore the local salt marsh with their teachers and "real" scientists. They observe the marsh, collect salinity data, and study the tides. This hands -on project is also multi-disciplinary and helps students understand the importance of the salt marsh historically, scientifically and culturally.

6th Grade Salt Marsh Vegetation Monitoring Program- Seabrook Hampton Estuary Alliance (SHEA)

"Picture Post" Project

The “Picture Posts” that SHEA installed on school property integrates a salt marsh monitoring program into the existing curriculum using simple measuring metrics to record and track salt marsh vegetation changes and movements. Students use the post to take pictures of the marsh and and then identify ways to make the data and findings available to the public which could occur through a project- specific page on the SHEA website, student reports, student-led presentations, or infographics.

Participating 6th grade students are “citizen scientists,” learning about different types of salt marsh vegetation and how to identify the varieties, plotting and measuring where the vegetation changes, and keeping track of the locations of those changes over time. They will also learn about sea-level rise and how it may impact the environment around them. Once a baseline has been established, they can also learn to identify how the changes differ from year to year. The skills they may learn or improve are plant identification, data analysis, and communication.

After our 6th graders came back from a week at The Ecology School in Saco Maine, they had a day in the field with the SHEA team and Sergio Bonilla, Principal Wetland and Wildlife Ecologist of Mission Wetland and Ecological Services. This was their first experience with how to use the "picture posts" and they also identified several species of wetlands plants, building on their knowledge of the importance of healthy ecosystems. This type of real-world, project-based, experiential learning wouldn't be possible without the generosity of our community partners. Thank you!

8th Grade Mission Kid to Kid Project- Winnacunnet High School

Seabrook Middle School is in year two of hosting the Mission Kid to Kid project. This year 18 Winnacunnet students have signed up to participate in this ELO project created by Baylee Jacobs, a current senior at WHS. They are scheduled to visit our 8th graders during their advisory (RAM) time twice a month for the entire school year. The Mission Kid to Kid team has identified themes that will guide the activities and discussions: Middle school experiences, Meeting New People, Individuality, Using Your Voice, Self Confidence and Self Care, Maturing and Growing, and Self Reflection. This is an opportunity to build relationships, mentor individual students, support the transition to WHS and build a bridge from their home school to the regional high school.

Mission Statement: As students grow up and become adults, they change, mature, and figure out who they want to be. This makes middle school and high school a great time for students to experience new things, build confidence, learn advocacy skills and how to use their voices, and figure out who they want to be and how to be the best versions of themselves. The members of Mission: Kid to Kid have learned some very valuable lessons that they want to share with younger teens by mentoring them as they transition to high school.

Student Agency

FLEX Block

We are a safe and supportive school where students and staff have a voice and choice in their learning and in curriculum/assessment.

All middle school students have a FLEX block built into their schedules four days a week. FLEX is a block that gives students time to pursue topics and activities that interest them. This time is student centered and allows opportunities for student choice. Examples of these choices include: additional time in UA classes, project based experiences, community based activities, team building time, school band and chorus and many others. The FLEX activities rotate monthly so that all students have a chance to explore multiple interests and experiences.

Seabrook Middle School is hosting guest SEL/Wellness/Yoga Instructor, Leigh Sloss. She will be joining monthly FLEX blocks throughout the school year to support and instruct students in the areas of wellness, yoga and social and emotional learning. This is a unique opportunity for students to try something new, learn positive coping strategies and practice within a small group setting. This is an optional program that is open to all students.

“ Leigh's vision is to bring social, emotional, and mindfulness learning into schools as a unifying link between academics, health, and community…As a former educator, Leigh witnessed firsthand the need for children to feel safe and at ease before they could learn…Leigh understands that learning basic self-care and having tools in your back pocket to apply in any situation are must-haves in today's busy and stressful world. These tools can help you to calm down, pause, notice, and respond…Empowering young people to tune into themselves teaches them to do the same for others.”

Equitable Access for All

Embedded Professional Development

We are a safe and supportive school committed to providing an inclusive environment that fosters academic and social emotional growth.

The middle school math vertical team is participating in ongoing math instructional coaching with Karolyn Wurster from Math Empowered. The goals are to: strengthen math instructional strategies, learn from colleagues and coaching, provide teachers the tools they need to differentiate within the classroom setting and share a tangible toolkit of resources that support the continued implementation of the Eureka Math program.
