We are proud to have participated in the Redwood Middle School PTA Spring Festival as another of our outreach events! This marked our first member recruitment outreach to increase the presence of this club within the school community. Throughout the event we engaged parents and school staff members as well as the Saratoga City Council leaders with robot driving demonstrations. We explained how our club started up and what it was that we do. During the event, we proudly announced that STEM was officially becoming an elective next year! That night, we also showcased our 3D printer at work printing a gear. The printer is one of the available tools in STEM. In total, we recruited 6 people up front, and also gave out business cards to interested parents. All in all, it was a great experience! After the Spring Festival, even more people joined our club; we got 13 new members after the event.
With Saratoga High School's FRC season coming to an end, we were invited to take a look at their workshops, machinery, and robot game before they traveled to the 2018 Houston Worlds Championship! This was an valuable experience as we got a great opportunity to meet some of the FRC team directors and gain exposure to the highly competitive and challenging world of FRC. We got the chance to tour the Engineering Workshop which held several impressive tools including 2 different CNC machines, laser cutters, and rotating saws. Afterwards, we took a look at the robotics rooms and a display of past robots and trophies. Furthermore, several juniors and seniors explained to us the details of networking and coding that operated on their robot. We even got a look into powerful algorithms including the "Smooth Path Planner" originally developed by "The Cheesy Poofs" in the 2014 FRC Championships. In the end, we actually gained some attention from high school FRC members who wanted to help out our club in the future!
