EXPRESSIONS & EQUATIONS

An EXPRESSION is a mathematical statement that involves numbers, variables, or a combination of numbers and variables and operation symbols. It does NOT have an equal sign or an inequality symbol.

An EQUATION is made up of two expressions joined by an equal sign.

"SIMPLIFY" BEFORE YOU "SOLVE"

STEP 1: Use the Order of Operations to simplify the expressions on each side.

STEP 2: Use the REVERSE Order of Operations to solve the equation.

Start by combining all "like" terms from both sides through addition and subtraction.
Put all terms containing variables on one side and all constant terms on the other.
Once there are no more "like" terms left anywhere in the equation, then you can use multiplication and division to remove the coefficient of the variable.
