Membership

10% or more of the elected members of our committee must have children enrolled at Birney who are currently designated English Learners.

Remaining members may be parents with children who are not designated English Learners, staff members, or members of the community.

We welcome all members of the Birney community to join the Birney ELAC.

How to Elect New Members

 1. The current committee votes to go through an appointment process to fill open ELAC member positions. Newly appointed members serve out the term of the member(s) who have resigned.

2. A discussion is held to look at all of the interested candidates.

3. Current ELAC members can make recommendations. The school may also know about candidates who would like to serve as ELAC members.

4. It is up to the current ELAC committee to look at ALL interested candidates, then to have a discussion about those candidates, bearing in mind that the committee still must meet the state-mandated composition requirement (10% parents of ELs on committee = or > % current ELs enrolled at site).

5. The current committee then votes to appoint the interested candidate to each open ELAC position.

6. The newly appointed ELAC members are notified. Results are posted and made public.

7. After the appointments, all ELAC members (present and newly elected) meet to receive training.
