4th Grade

July 16th: Great seeing those of you that came out for the last ALL SCHOOL ZOOM. Here is my last video of this school year for 4th graders -- and an idea of how to use GARLIC and LETTUCE (two of the plants we looked at this year in the Allium and Sunflower families respectively). Please use this link to connect to the salad page that has some dressing recipes so you can get inspiration to get creative in the kitchen!

Monarchs: Migration and Transformation

July 8th, 2020: Below is an amazing video that captures the transformation of a Monarch Butterfly caterpillar into a chrysalis. Below is also some information and activities you can do regarding Monarchs -- connecting them to the unit you do in class on MIGRATION. I have seen many MONARCHS both at Birney and in my yard? How about you?

June 25th: Hello Fourth Graders. Before we begin to dive into the topic of migration -- let's go back to an old favorite topic: COMPOST. Are you composting at home? Composting is an important way not only to reduce the amount of trash you have -- but also to make great soil. Worm Composting -- like we do in our bins at school or our Vermiponics -- is a really great strategy for smaller spaces. The ingredients for any compost are the same. If you don't have a fancy bin you can make your own out of a container. If you have your composting down I would love to hear you make an advertisement for other people to do some composting on FLIPGRID: FLIPGRID LINK

June 9: Hello Fourth Graders! The weather is getting hot. I find that I am more alert early in the morning and in the evening when it is cooler. This is a great time to watch the BIRDS. To listen and watch birds I invite you to check out this activity sheet I made: BIRDS AND THEIR SONGS . In it is a podcast I made with a neighborhood ornithologist (bird biologist) -- he used to have kids at Birney! If you just want to chill and listen you can click to the link right here: BIRD PODCAST . And then -- spend a few days noticing the sounds, and even the types of birds...are they attracted to something near you? Are they nesting and signaling to their young? Isn't it amazing how we can completely forget that these creatures are with us all the time! Share your reflections on this activity: FLIPGRID LINK

May 27th: Hey Fourth Graders! Did any of you check out the SEEDS IN YOUR KITCHEN ACTIVITIES ? This week I invite you to extend some of the work you did in class and garden before we went on break regarding ADAPTATIONS. Here is a description of an ADAPTATION HUNT you can do on a walk in your neighborhood: ADAPTATION - Looking at Leaves in your Neighborhood

Hello Fourth Graders. Remember the song we sang for the Fall Assembly? This is the version made by the author of the song. Join in and sing along! Such a great song. I miss you. If you would like to start gardening at home, Check out this link for some cool ideas!
