TORTILLA DAY!
If we were on campus we would have ground up that glass gem corn and made fresh tortillas. I really miss being in the garden together and having those wonderful experiences of seed to table together! This video shows women in Mexico making tortillas. We would have done something similar. I hope you are finding ways to enjoy summer produce - either produce that you are growing or produce that you are able to get from local gardens, farms or markets.
GATHERING WORDS
July 7th: This week we are going to begin our EXPRESS OURSELVES end of year unit. This is an opportunity for you to relax and find something beautiful to reflect on and then find your words. I will share with you a couple videos from my garden -- but you may choose to go do this somewhere close to you -- or even inside. Share your words using this FORM (also linked to the activity sheet below) -- or just write in your own journal at home!
June 25th: As the Three Sisters Garden continues to grow I want to invite you to explore one more grain crop. This crop is not a well know Grass Family plant -- but has totally captured my attention. Remember the story we read last year TASTY BABY BELLY BUTTONS ?(if you want to remember it you can listen to me reading it to the 2nd graders HERE ). The millet dumplings in the story got me curious. While I was researching millet I found this excellent video about them and how the crops of wheat and rice have overshadowed this delicious grain! CLICK HERE TO WATCH MILLET VIDEO I tried making dumplings and they are delicious!! By the way they have millet at Sprouts and Barons!
The three sisters are growing....and so are those delicious edible weeds !!
June 16th: As our CORN, BEANS and SQUASH are growing I invite you to think about the GRAINS of the world. Even when you think about corn -- there are so many colors and varieties. Similarly for WHEAT there are many varieties. Look at these photographs that photographer Peter Menzel took of families all over the world and what they bought for a week. CLICK HERE: HUNGRY PLANET Do you notice any similarities to your families diet? Are there common items in the photos? I personally relate to the families who have a lot of vegetables! What else do you notice?
June 4th, 2020: The THREE SISTERS garden is growing. This week the theme is COMPANION PLANTING. Each plant has a superpower that it shares with the others. What can we learn from these plant superpowers? What are your superpowers that you can use to be a companion to others in your life? Remember -- Ms. Mindy would love to help you grow your own garden so let me know how I can help you using FLIPGRID or email to mswanson@sandi.net
May 19th: Today we will review the stories: Grandmother Corn and Bean and what could be the THIRD SISTER in the three sisters and what is her job? (HINT: MULCH MOUNTAIN -- what does mulch do for the garden?) Give me a response to this or my Corn Planting video on Flipgrid .
Remember how we plant corn? Grandmother Corn gave very clear directions. See if I did this right in this video: Ms. Mindy Planting Corn
