July 16th: Hello second graders. This is my video on how to make FRESH HOME-MADE PICKLES. You can pickle anything -- it doesn't have to be a cucumber....but since CUCUMBERS are in our SQUASH FAMILY, why not? You could also do ZUCHINNI! Hope to see you Monday!
Best,
Ms. Mindy
July 9th: Hello Second Graders! I read you the book about the PUMPKIN CIRCLE...and pumpkins -- all squash -- all PLANTS have a similar lifecycle - a circle from seed to plant and back to seed. Similarly if we were in the garden -- we would be caring for our earthworms and watching our Monarch Butterfly habitat for the evidence of these cycles. Do they connect? What is the connection between a pumpkin, a worm and a butterfly? Go out in nature and observe these different organisms and/or share on FLIPGRID
Hello Second Graders:
While I work on my lesson here is something beautiful for you to check out!!! Thank Senora Goudy for the tip on this one! She's the BEST.
Ms. Mindy
June 25th: The lifecycle in nature goes around -- are you witnessing that anywhere around you? Today's lesson focuses on the pumpkin lifecycle and just refreshing the patterns in our SQUASH plant family -- the shapes of each plant part, the way they cycle round. The GOURDS are taking over some places at Birney -- can you help Ms. Mindy think of ideas of what we can use those GOURDS for? FLIPGRID RESPONSE
June 15th, 2020: While I am working on my puppet show film plan I have another activity for you. We talked about SYMMETRY in garden, remember? Well I invite you to make NATURE ART. Use the description and examples to the LEFT to help you. Do you think people seeing your design will enjoy the beauty? If we were in the garden we would do a "gallery walk" of our different designs. How can we share them with each other? Can you send me a photo on FLIPGRID? Click here to record a video
May 28th: Great seeing those of you who joined us on the ZOOM Dance Party with Coach Lord today! Today I link in with your fairy tales unit to bring you one of my favorite stories I share with students: TASTY BABY BELLY BUTTONS. In this unit we will explore magic in the garden and how the garden can inspire our own imagination. Check out my reading of this Japanese Tale. Stand by for more activities linking this to our gardening efforts. And remember if you have any seed or plant requests -- PLEASE contact me in the email or phone number below!
