Week 3 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

pen-pencil holder

Design a model of a pen and pencil holder that may rest on a flat surface (Table Top). that will be 3D printed with PLA plastic.

after searching on the internet i was inspired by design which is simple and specify requirments.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

  • fusion 360 for the design

  • cura 4.10 for the 3D printing

  • Pursa i3 machine

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

first, I draw 2 rectangles in 2 parallel planes, then I used loft feature to achieve required shape. after that, I draw line in Z-axis and used feature called path pattern to repeat the shape many times in chosen path. Next, I combined the shapes to one body. last step was drawing rectangle samller than smallest one and extruded cut to empty it for putting pen and pencil in. Finally, Cahnging the appearance to blue plastic.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

3D printing Modeling:

First, I wanted to manufacture pen holder, So I designed it on fusion 360 and exported as ".stl" file . Then, I imported it on Ultimaker Cura. the next step was modifing the dimensions, Temperature, removind supports and slice it.

the 3D printing:

  1. Rename the file with the printing details "PI3MK2_sahar_1h29min_14g_green.gcode"

  2. put the file on the printer SD card

  3. unload old filement

  4. load new filement

  5. choose the file on the Machine and RUN

Exporting the file in .stl

Community of Learning

Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?

before solving space problem

after solving space problem

I asked my instructor for the feedback on the design. after her aggreement on the design I asked her for the advise to fill these spaces, after trying many times we found out that it can be solved by increasing number of layers.

because of limited time allowed for printing, modifications on dimensions wasn't enough to make the design as one part, So after printing the product was weak and cracks were happened

Overcoming Challenges

When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this assignment?

  1. when I first exported the STL file, opened it on Cura and slice it. it was more than 3 hours and 38 grams, Which isn't allawable. So, the instructor adviced me to change the dimensions. I changed it from 65*65*90 mm to 40*40*53 mm, that lead to make it 1 h 30 m and 18 grams.

  2. I was facing problem of having spaces between the layes despite the combine feature, but my instructor and I found out that it ends by increasing number of layers.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

  • Utilizing Fusion 360's 3D features and sub-features to create 3D objects, will make it easier to have cool project

  • Manage 3D components in Fusion 360 and using the joints between different parts

  • working more on Cura 4.10

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

PLENTY OF FEATURES!! it was amazing to practise all these features on fusion to design really cool designs.

Weekly Digest [OPTIONAL]

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.
