Week 2 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

this week, we were introduced to the Fusion 360 and designed a simple 2.5D mobile phone holder, then we will make it using laserworks software by using laser cutting machine. The target was to apply our understanding of how parts can be assembled and joined together using T-slots, bolts and nuts to create a mobile holder 2.5D design.

Low-fidelity VS. medium-fidelity

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

First, I choose the second design cause it suits the assignment requirements and simpler than the first one.

Then, I draw it on Fusion 360 as 2D design and after that I extruded in 3D

I saved it as DXF file, then I opened it on lasercutting software to print it on wood sheet.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

3D shape

After choosing the desin I started drawing in fusion 360. Starting with face 1, I started with drawing lines and assemble them, then I draw a rectangle and half T-slot after that I use the mirror to mirror another rectangle and the other half of T-slot

*note on face 2: I used offset to have same shape smaller 5mm and draw the central rectangle on that line of offset.

According to face 2, copied tha original shape and then offset it in 5mm. I draw rectangle with center on offset line and half circle the i mirrored them.

the next step was extrude faces in 3mm thickness as wood sheet thickness. then, I made joint between the 2 components with the rectangular shape.

1- Draw the outline by connected lines

2- Draw offset to ba as centerline for needed shapes to draw

3- Draw circle and rectangle needed on the offset line

4- reflicte the rectangle on the circle center

5- Draw the other face as coping the first face and draw rectangle and half-T-slot, then I mirrored it on horizontal line of end half-t-slot

Development/Implementation Process

Laser cutting:

  1. open the flash memory on the laser cut PC.

  2. open my RLD file

  3. check the speed (18) and power (65)

  4. watch the preview

  5. prepare the origin position of the work piece

  6. frametrack.

  7. choose my file from the files

  8. RUN

It was 57secs.

Laser cutting values and time

I tried to draw the parts close to each others to optimize the material, then I uploaded the file on the computer and with the instructor help, I ran the machine. I got the product in 57sec.

Community of Learning

Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?

first design

at first I designed the holder with no rectangles and 2 T-slots. but I couldn't fit the T-slots with the holes on the other face. after that the instructor recommended to cancel T-slot on bottom and insirt 2 rectangles and make the last T-slot between them.

Overcoming Challenges

When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this assignment?

  • I got stuck inthe first design cause I wasn't good at drawing the T-slots, yet.

  • I deleted the T-slots in the bottom and added 2 rectangles and made 2-holes coressponding to thr 2 rectangles to fit the 2 patrs.

  • I just needed to think more cause may be it could be better with some fillits or dawings on it

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

Fusion of course! working on this program, specialy many projects to practice on will help me alot to design the final project right, fast and accurate

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

  1. working with fusion on components we are using in our life.

  2. seeing the mobile holder I designed on real.

Weekly Digest [OPTIONAL]

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.

I applied the videos and made arabisc, wordrobe and rocking chair.
