Pen and Pencil holder
Inspiration
This week assignment is about fabricating a pen and pencil holder of our design using the design software fusion 360.
I got inspired from the image on the left after conducting a google search. the requirement was such that the holder is made of plywood and the brackets are made of 3D printing but instead of brackets i used T slots with captive nuts, therefore i will only be using laser cut .the model needs to have at least three parts,at least 2 compartments and share one base.
Laser cutter
Fusion 360 for designing the holder
Plywood 3mm is the material used for fabrication
Ultimaker Cura Software for slicing and preparing the file to be printed
El Malky ML149 CO2 Laser Cutter for fabrication
Design process:
open fusion 360
create components for each side
Create a Sketch for side A1 using rectangular with dimension 80 height and 100 base, drawed construction line ,create Tslot, and finally taps of 12mm,i mirror them using construction line, make sure the sketch is fully defined, finish sketch and extrude by 3mm
As this side is slightly similar to side A1 and i called it side A2, i copy paste new so that the new component is not affected by the previous one,i added the same design but with X slots and removed taps, make sure the sketch is fully defined,i extruded by 3mm
Create sketch for side B,a rectangular with heigh 80 and base 156 base, made x slot and taps on the middle and one extremity, used lines to trim and get the L shape of my design and used filet on two edges, make sure the sketch is fully defined.extruded and copy paste as two side are the same
use joint to join between components
create sketch for side C, using rectangular with heigh 40 and base 100,draw a construction line and for mirroring taps, i used one tap in each side and two taps with the Tslot, make sure the sketch is fully defined, extrude it by 3mm.
Use joint to join this side to the rest of the design
Now for the bottom component, select one of the bottom taps of the sides ,create sketch, draw a rectangular ,project the taps and the small rectangular for T slot which is 3mm and its the entrance of the bolt.draw multiple 3,2 mm circle around all the small rectangular of T slot on the projected rectangular, make sure all sketch is defined ,extrude them by 3 mm
joint it with the design by selecting the right snaps
i downloaded svg files from 3axis,insert them and extruded cut on the components
use appearance to color the parts or choose the material of parts in fusion
Laser cutting:
Save dxf files one by one
Open RD work software
Import dxf files
Select the whole design, once in red select black color for cut(by preference),select layer in panel on the right and set the power to 45 and speed as 40 and red for Scan ( Speed 300, power 20)
Make sure you put your 3mm plywood, put the holders, check focal length and set the origin, frame it, close the opening using both hands and start the fabrication.

Design
An advice from instructor was to use X slot along with T slot for better holding my pen and pencil holder and it was helpful.
i got stuck when i wanted to have nice patterns on my design so a peer suggested to download patterns from open source 3axis and insert it in design.A mistake others can avoid is not taking in account their dimensions before designing and this is critical so make sure you have in mind the exact dimensions you want to fabricate.

i believe that the skills i have aquired this week can help design a tight and well enclosed box for my final project, using the X slot,T slot ot bracket with captive nuts
Something that marked me this week is desiging a mopile holder using simple tools such as cardboard, glue and scissor,it was challenging but later i did come up with that fits my one phone
The lantern shown on this picture is one of the coolest thing i made with my group, the design has been challenging and we learned diferent design tool in order to come up with final output.
