Mercedez benz logo keychain
This week assignement is about fabricating two prototypes of our choice using 3D printing and laser cuter.
I 3D printed a loud whistle because i personally dont know how to whistle and i had always difficulty to do so,for that reason i decided to make one.
For the laser cutting, am a big fan of cars more specifically mercedez benz brand so i laser cutted the logo it self.
Thingiverse ,an open source library for the design

3D printing
In order to 3D print my whistle,i had to use Thingiverse(link in bottom of the journal). After downloading the design as STL file format, I opened it in Cura software.
For the parameters, I consulted the settings suggested by the design owner on the website, but I made some edits.
by adding activating an adhesion. Additionally, I set the layer to 0.15 mm to reduce printing time and have reasonable finish.
i sliced it to see the time and the amount of filament in gram used which i got 39 min and 4g of PLA filament.
the final dimensions are : 48x 11.2127x 17(xyz) ,no scaling were made from the original file.
Finally i previewed it and, saved the file in g- code format , with naming convention of the desgin name, time and grams.
Laser cutting
I downloaded the file in DXF format from 3axis(see link in bottom of the journal). Then i started working on RD work. The file originally has different logos so i had to select the logo i want to work with, after that there are some changes that needs to be done in order fit perfectly as a keychain. The changes are represented in the above pictures, the circle that holds the keychain has to be grouped with the main circle that holds the logo.so i had to select the circles then select group from the icon.
Next I started by selecting handle from the icons, delete overlap, enable overlap lines and press ok. Now there is a little issue after preview, i noticed that its scanning the interior part of the logo and not the 3 figures of the logo. For that i had to draw a circle (41.371,41.368) .i had to lock the circle and adjust it a bit in order to make the 3 figures touch each other through the circle and i then grouped again that circle with my design. Finally previewed it and it shows the exact expectation of my design as shown in the dark background picture above.i selected the lines based on the action they represented, then assigned speed and color to each selection.
I chose the following colors to represent each action:
Cut - Black
Engrave - Red
I set the cutting action as the last step to ensure it wouldn't affect the design, finally export the file in Ai format.
(The photos show the used power and speed for each action) .
3D printing:
1-Changed the filament with desired color by unloading and loading the new filament
2-I put the SD card in machine
3) Choose my file inside the SD card
4)Started printing it
Laser cutting:
1) chose my file .
2) Put the 3mm plywood sheet in machine.
3) Put the tool that holds your sheet.
4) Adjust the focal length.
5) Choose the place you want to print by using arrows.
6) Make it the origin point.
7) Click on frame to see the size.
8) Click on start and observe the process
The day i was working on my assignement, the fablab specialist Ms.Menna ELKfrawy helped me through the process of adjusting and fabrication.
I had to pause during the fabrication of the laser cutter and check the focal length because the plywood has been changed thanks to the fablab specialist.
Focal length
I will use the skills i aquired from the laser cutter to design my electronic enclosure and 3D printing to design spray nozzles for my automatic cleaning system.
Something i can never forget from this week is this cute dog from our group activity that we made using laser cutting machine
Damian dog
Some other cool thing we made in group this week was the T-rex using 3D printing
