Week 3 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

The assignment is to make a 3D printed pencil holder.

I got the inspiration from these images: link

so I decided to mix a lot of basic ideas to generate semi complex one.

Simple but elegant xD, so lets jump in ^_^

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

  • I used Autodesk Fusion360 to make the 3D Design.

  • I used Ultimaker CURA to generate the 3d model for printing.

  • I will use the 3D printer for printing the model.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

Design Steps

  • First I made the base sketch and then use Revolve to make it in 3D.

  • I extruded the middle part up.

  • On top of the cylinder in the middle I make an offset plane then make a sketch of bigger circle.

  • Then I used Loft to attach the 2 circles togethers to make the flipped cone shape.

  • I used Shell to make it empty from inside.

  • I used Fillet in some areas.

  • I cut the whole body to 3 bodies top - middle cylinder and the bottom base.

  • I made the sketch for the slice, extruded it with intersect option.

  • I used Circular pattern to repeat the part 20 times around the Z axis.

  • Add some materials on the parts.

  • Export the file in STL.

3D print configure Steps

  • I open the STL file in Cura.

  • I configured the height of the model to be 45 mm instead of 100 mm and the layer height to 0.3 & infill 20 so it reduced the time and the used materials to 5g and 36 minutes.

  • I saved the gcode file to my computer.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

  1. I exported the gcode file from Cura then upload it on the SD Card

  2. I plugged in the SD Card in the printer then choose my file.

  3. Start printing

Community of Learning

Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?

I take feedback from my group meeting they liked it.

Also I have some recommendations from Ahmed Sami & Amany to make the angle of the parts in the middle not too big to avoid using supports, and also to make the layer height 0.3 not 0.2 this will reduce quality but saves time. That was a very good advice really.

Overcoming Challenges

When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this assignment?

I think I got stuck a little bit in how to think like a designer

I know the tools but I had some bad times thinking how to start so I watched a lot of design videos and that works well I feel I am more confident to start a design myself.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

The coolest thing is to work with geeky guys and girls It was very fun really sharing ideas and jokes xD

I will never forget the instructor that helped me when I stuck and give me some advices.
