Week 1 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

Title of Media

For Laser Cutter I choose Kakashi's Sketch from Naruto anime.

For 3D Printing I choose Morty from Rick & Morty TV series.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

  • I used Photoshop to edit Kakashi image a little bit.

  • I used this this website to convert png to dxf format.

  • I used LaserWork to export the dxf to laser cutter machine .

  • I used the LaserCutter to make the Kakashi toy.

  • I use UltiMaker Cura to export the 3D printed morty file.

  • I use 3D printer to make the Morty figure.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

Laser Cutting

  1. First I get the Kakashi png image from this website.

  2. Convert the png image to dxf after fixing some issues in the red color from the eye from this website.

  3. Import the dxf into LaserWork.

  4. Configure the Cut & Scan parts

      • Red is for scan I choose 300 speed and 35 power to engrave more in the wood.

      • Black is for cut I choose 30 speed and 65 power.

  5. Finally I hit download to transfer file to laser cutting machine.

3D Printing

  1. Get the Morty 3d model from this website.

  2. Import the STL file into Cura and check the slices.

  3. The model in the original size would have taken a lot of time (2.5 hours) and materials (46 grams) so I scale it down by using the scaling tool from the left bar to a proper scale and the result is half an hour time and 1 gram and that was perfect for me.

  4. I thought a lot for making supports but I choose not to and depend on over hang and the instructor in the lab helped me for this choice so I make the risk and it gets printed successfully.

  5. I tried orientations and settle down to this, I don't use supports anyway but this was the best pose to depend on the over hang, so I did it by using the orientation from face option and choose the feet face.

  6. From the print setting menu in the prepare page I choose to make a brim by clicking the adhesion checkbox.

  7. I choose 0.2 for layer height profile and 20 infill from the print setting menu.

  8. Finally I click on preview and see the slices it was good no errors some parts like the under leg and the face needs support but as I mentioned before I choose not to make it because there would be a lot of supports for such small figure.

  9. Export the .gcode file.

  10. Save the file to printer SD Card by clicking on Save to disk and named it morty_0.2mm_redPLA_1gm_26m.gcode.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

Laser cutter

  1. After I clicked on download button I went to the wood and take 1 sheet.

  2. Take the sheet and place it on the laser cutter working area and placed it right in position.

  3. I turned on the machine from the 2 buttons on the right of the machine.

  4. I press File > [Enter] > Memory Files > [Enter] > [Choose file name] > [Enter].

  5. I track the working area by choosing Track Frame then hit Enter.

  6. I hit Workitime preview to show how long the process will take (5 minutes).

  7. Finally I hit Run and watching the magic happens xD.

  8. After the process finished I take the output shape and preprocess it with colors.

3D Printer

  1. After I upload the .g file on the SD Card I plugged in the SD card in the 3d printer.

  2. The were red PLA filament on the machine so I go with this choice for speeding up the usage time.

  3. I choose my file and start running the machine from right switch.

  4. By using the control knob I clicked on Print from SD > select my file.

  5. I don't remember exactly the pre configured heat but i think it was 210~220.

  6. Start printing the model then close the door.

  7. I waited about 26 minutes then the model is done I opened the door.

  8. I used a wide knife don't now it's name but it's the tool to remove the model from the bed.

Community of Learning

Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?

Title of Media

Yes I asked all people in the lab and they like my design.

I asked for how to make the preprocessing and the instructor tell me how to do it with colored pens.

I helped one of the students in their wood design and it was very awesome coincidence he choose a Naruto doddle also xD.

The feedback was very helpful and all people in the lab was very funny and hard workers I give them also feedback on their designs.

Overcoming Challenges

When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this assignment?

I got stuck on the model slicing should I make supports or not and the instructor helped me a lot by setting the proper configurations for the print.

I searched for similar situation and I find google pages advices that helped me.

My advice don't use supports all the time you can really depend on over hang a lot especially when the supports are difficult to remove.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

I will use 3D printer for making my hand game gadget for the final project.

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

The coolest thing is to work with geeky guys and girls It was very fun really sharing ideas and jokes xD

I will never forget the instructor that helped me when I stuck and give me some advices.
