Week 2 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

For this week I want to make a phone holder created with Fusion 360 & Laser cutter.

I get the inspiration from google images but I made my own custom design.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

  • I used Photoshop to edit the png images.

  • I used this this website to convert png to dxf format.

  • I used Fusion360 to make the holder parts.

  • I used LaserWork to export the dxf to laser cutter machine .

  • I used the LaserCutter to make the cut parts.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

Design Steps

  • First of all I measure all of the dimensions on my phone size.

  • Start opening a new project on Fusion 360.

  • Make the front part sketch and make it fully defined.

  • Extrude it to 3mm.

  • Make the back part sketch and make it fully defined.

  • Extrude it to 3mm.

  • I make a rigid joint to assemble the 2 parts together.

  • Insert 2 decal images one for the front parts and an other one for the back part and resize them well on the parts.

  • Finally Export each sketch to DXF format.

  • Open LaserWork and import the 2 DXF files.

  • Position them on the working area.

  • I take the PNG images and convert them on an online converter to DXF format and then import them in LaserWork.

  • Position the 2 images on the parts.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

Laser cutter

  1. I exported the 2d sketches into DXF format.

  2. I converted the 2 PNG images to DXF format.

  3. Inside LaserWork I attach the 2 main sketches beside each other and give them Layer Cut (Black) with 18 speed and 65 power.

  4. I then attached the 2 DXF for the images and position them on each sketch then add a layer on every DXF, I could put them in one layer but to fasten the cut I had to make 2 scan layers (green & red) with 300 speed & 400 power to make the nozzle focus on each drawing alone without navigating the whole workspace.

  5. Take the sheet and place it on the laser cutter working area and placed it right in position.

  6. I turned on the machine from the 2 buttons on the right of the machine.

  7. I press File > [Enter] > Memory Files > [Enter] > [Choose file name] > [Enter].

  8. I track the working area by choosing Track Frame then hit Enter.

  9. I hit Workitime preview to show how long the process will take (13 minutes).

  10. Finally I hit Run and watching the magic happens xD.

Community of Learning

Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?

Yes I asked all people in the lab and they like my design, someone in the lab told me to try make it a little bit smaller because the back part is so big so I can minimize it a little and still functioning well.

I helped one of the students (Amr) in their wood design he asked me how to configure the depth of engraving like my design by configuring the speed and it was very awesome coincidence he choose a Naruto doddle also xD.

The feedback was very helpful and all people in the lab was very funny and hard workers I give them also feedback on their designs.

Overcoming Challenges

When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this assignment?

My wood sheet was not good for my configuration and the other problem I was late so I want to fasten the process so I asked my instructor (Amany) to help me solve the problem and she make it in 2 steps:

1- Reorder the dxf parts in laser work to be able to fit on the sheet.

2- Make 2 scan layers (red & green) to make the nozzle focus on a specific part in time and not go here and there wasting time reducing the time from 17 minutes to 12 minutes.

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

The coolest thing is to work with geeky guys and girls It was very fun really sharing ideas and jokes xD

I will never forget the instructor that helped me when I stuck and give me some advices.
