The Squids vs The 67 Elite played against each other in the last dodge ball tournament for the finals! The winners for this game will receive a custom t-shirt with their name on the back and can also wear the shirt to school instead of the uniform top. Unfortunately, if one of the teams loses they will get eliminated and not advance to the next game (which was against the teachers). Each dodge ball game happens every Monday and Tuesday. For Lunch Time Sports, you will need your school ID to get inside the gym and watch the games. Students can participate in these games if they speak to the hosts, Mr. Garcia and Ms. Villalobos, at the beginning of the quarter and sign up. If they join, students can tell their friends to join as well and have fun playing against other teams together. Do you think you’re going to participate in Lunch Time Sports this school year?
The best soccer team around!
Sports @ ESMS written by: Estrella Ramirez, Jamie Salinas, Fernando Ceja, and Castiel Betancourt
October's sport focus was on our amazing 8th grade soccer team. So far, they are an amazing team, but that’s because they have practice on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. For this year, the Spartans have faced all the middle schools but the most challenging team to them was Harden. The 8th grade team has won a total of 4 games with their amazing coach and are undefeated with 0 losses. They are always confident for every game! At the time of this publication, their next game was against John Gutierrez. The team's main goal is to be in the league championship and to always win. Overall, the 8th grade soccer team has been undefeated and successful throughout this school year.
Spreading awareness during Ally Week!
Clubs written by: Adriana Jimenez, Isaac Vazquez, and Genesis Zamora
Want to know more about the Be Yourself Club? The Be Yourself Club was created for students to feel safe and comfortable. The term “Be Yourself” to the advisers, Mr. Beering and Ms. Solano, means to feel free to express yourself. During their meetings they raise awareness and provide a safe place to support each other. The Be Yourself Club has been at ESMS for 8 years. The advisers would love for more students to join the club to find themselves, or to find their real personality. They meet on Tuesdays in room B6 or in room A5. Anyone can join even if they’re not part of the LGBTQ community; you can also join if you’re an ally! Don't know what an ally is? An ally is someone who supports the LGBTQ community. So if you’re an ally or part of the LGBTQ community come and join the Be Yourself Club!
Pink-Out Friday for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
News @ ESMS written by: Fernanda Betancourt, Marley Alderete, and Carolina Nieto
What is Breast Cancer Awareness month and why is it important? Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to support people that are struggling with Breast Cancer. Around one in eight women develop breast cancer over their lifetime. While it is a common type of cancer, the factors surrounding breast cancer may not be common knowledge. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is one way to educate and inspire the public. Most people get this common cancer due to smoking and alcohol use. Some family members who suffer from Breast Cancer can develop it and pass it down to others even though they don't smoke or drink alcohol. For those who have been affected by or survived breast cancer, it can also be a time to reflect, honor those who were lost, and celebrate those who have survived. About 4 million women in the U.S.A have a history of breast cancer and this will grow to 5.3 million women by 2035! Here at ESMS in the month of October, students are allowed to wear pink each Friday in October to support the cause. Most importantly, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to show support and solidarity for those affected and celebrate the survivors who fought through the disease!
Fernando going to wrestling practice.
7th Grade Interview written by: Olga Jimenez, Manuel Rodriguez, and Ashley Solis
Have you ever wondered what Fernando Rangel-Rangel is doing during lunch? You might just see him with his friends hanging out! Fernando's educational journey began at his elementary school, which was Fremont. He is also very involved in school activities; participating in wrestling and joining clubs such as Music and Wyldlife. Fernando could’ve chosen another school like Harden, or Washington, but he chose to come to our wonderful school instead. Out of all the subjects, Fernando's favorite subject is History. Sadly, he couldn’t pick an elective, but hopefully next year he will! An instrument he enjoys playing in his free time is his guitar. He plays guitar because he looks up to Ariel Camacho, known for his amazing skills.
Fredy praying for a good school year!
8th Grade Interview written by: Justin Soto, Kimberly Rodriguez, Liliana Ramirez, and Miguel Rodriguez
Fredy Hernandez is one of our future promoting 8th graders here at El Sausal Middle School. In the following year, he will be attending Alisal High School. He is known to be one of our great members of our school’s wrestling team. Fredy had said that he likes this year better than last year because he gets a chance to teach the 7th graders about wrestling. Fredy’s dream job is being a graphic designer, he wants to work on bigger projects, gain more experience and get paid well. He also said that for this Halloween he wants to dress up as an inflatable and match with one of his friends! Although he couldn’t choose any elective, he spends his time at Club Lucha (our wrestling club) with his friends after school!
Mr. Buffo ready to play you a song!
Staff Interview written by: Jeremy Bueno, Jose Moreno, Maritza Alejo, and Jorge Aguirre
The staff member that we interviewed for the month of October was Mr. Buffo! He became an English teacher because his favorite subject was English. He likes many bands but his favorite band is the Beatles. Mr. Buffo doesn't know what made him so interested in music but his parents really liked music. Mr. Buffo pursued his education at San Francisco State University and he didn’t plan on becoming an English teacher until college. Mr. Buffo has been working here at ESMS for over 10 years! When Mr. Buffo was little he wanted to become a doctor or an astronomer. He is originally from the East Bay, but when his family moved nearby, we were lucky to get him to work at our school. If you see Mr. Buffo around, don’t be shy and say hi!
