- For example, in the case of Calcium and chlorine it would be CaCl2

- Are compounds formed by hydrogen and a metal element.
- The oxidation number of hydrogen is always -1
- If the metal has more than one oxidation number it is expressed in Roman numerals and in brackets.
E.g: Gold with hydrogen form Gold(III) hydride: AuH3

- Compounds formed by hydrogen and a nonmetal from group 16 or 17
- The oxidation number of hydrogen is always +1 and the nonmetal always has a negative oxidation number
- The way of naming this binary acids depends if they are in gaseous state of in an aqueous solution.
HCl (g) = Hydrogen Chloride (name of the nonmetal +ide)
HCl (aq) = Hydrochloric acid (hydro + name of the nonmetal+ ic + add acid)
