LUNCH N LEARN
Friday, January 9, 2026 - Encaustic painting with Shana Laursen - Shana grew up in Douglas, Alaska and after earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, she moved to San Francisco, where the learning experiences of her two children inspired her to pursue a Master of Education. Although she didn’t initially follow a traditional art path, Shana discovered that teaching offered a deeply creative and rewarding outlet—one that allowed her to incorporate visual elements into her work in meaningful ways.
Shana relocated to Bend in 2019, took a painting class at Layor Art and was instantly hooked. “Learning and exploring art practices has provided me with never-ending opportunities for a sense of fulfillment and community,” she says. Since then, she has experimented with nearly every 2D medium, with encaustic painting becoming one of her newest passions. She appreciates the unique qualities of wax—beautiful on its own, adaptable in combination with other materials, and capable of creating luminous protective layers.
