Many vendors are offering assistance to provide student access to software while physical campuses are closed or students are working more from home. While SAE is working directly with vendors, each vendor has different criteria, methods and requirements. In some cases you will need to download the software and make application for a licence or use a central form so we can make that application on your behalf. Please check the details for software related to your discipline.

Pro Tools Movie File Issues with

Apple has completed its transition to 64-bit technology with macOS Catalina. Pro Tools is a 64-bit application, but it has been relying on a few external 32-bit components for import, export, and playback of certain file types, such as QuickTime MOV files. Avid are looking to replace this functionality as soon as possible. In the meantime, they will be providing as much support as they can on Catalina, and they will be releasing functionality as it becomes available.

In order to get a movie to correctly import and export from Pro Tools, follow the steps below and utilise one of the listed applications. For more info on the issue, visit the Avid support article: https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/compatibility/Pro-Tools-Catalina-File-Type-Support

At Home: Stutter Encoder

Application: https://www.shutterencoder.com/en/

This application convert QuickTime movies (up to 1080p) into MXF OP-Atom video and audio that Pro Tools can import.

  • Step 1: Browse to the target QuickTime file that you’d like to play.

  • Step 2: Choose DNxHD as the Editing Codec in the Choose Function section.

  • Step 3: Set “Generate in OP-Atom format” in the Advanced Features section.

  • Step 4: Click the “Start function” button

  • Step 5: Import the resulting audio and video MXF files into Pro Tools. Audio will need to be imported separately from video.

On Campus: Adobe Encoder

Application: https://www.adobe.com/products/media-encoder.html

On campus, the Adobe Encoder application is preinstalled and can be used in the same way to encode a format compatible with Pro Tools.
